Realistic embroidery requires many layers of colors and fabric to achieve the perfect balance of artistry and practicality. This quilt uses hidden appliqué to both stabilize the stitches and add a very subtle pop of color underneath. After all the stitches are complete, admirers will barely notice the fabric holding it all together.
Swirling and sophisticated bean stitches in closely matching threads allow the background to stand out without stealing the attention from the cardinals in this tile scene.
For tile scenes, complete one block at a time using the same technique, then once all 12 blocks are finished, piece each block together to create one larger image. Use the diagram on the next page, “Quilt block size guide” to organize the blocks and keep track of the tile scene.
